Alan David Mitchell, age 78, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 5th, at the Lawton-Ft. Sill Veterans Center after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease and Lewy Body Dementia. Alan was born on July 31, 1947, in Oklahoma City, OK, to David and Mozelle Mitchell. After graduating from Northwest Classen High School, he served four years in the U.S. Army as a Morse Code Interpreter. Following his honorable discharge, he earned a Master's degree in Educational Psychology from Central State University (now the University of Central Oklahoma). Alan dedicated 24 years of his career as a Child Development Specialist at the Stephens County Health Department, retiring in 2002. In retirement, he became a methodical woodworker, making cabinets, furniture and other items for friends, family and the home. He was an avid reader-especially of history-and a lover of many music genres. Listening to his younger brother, Marty, play his guitar and sing requested songs was a "special treat". He also enjoyed gardening,"running" (at his steady pace) and took part in many memorable family and church youth group backpacking trips to eastern Oklahoma, New Mexico and Colorado. He served as a Duncan Regional Hospital Auxiliary Volunteer and proudly received recognition for his 2,818 service hours. Among his favorite places to hike was the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, particularly when joined by his grandchildren on adventures to the "Rock Rooms" or the "40-Foot Hole." If family or friends weren't available, his faithful dog "Inky" was always ready to tag along. Alan had a deep love for all animals-and needed a bumper sticker that said, "Caution, I brake for birds". Alan was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church and attended regularly until his move to the Lawton-Ft. Sill Veterans Center in February 2022. His family is forever grateful for the consistent, compassionate, and loving care provided to him by the VA center's staff. The amazing care provided by CompleteOK Hospice nurses and aides helped make him comfortable until the very end. Alan is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jane; daughter, Stephanie Jenkins and children, Henry and Cora; son, Matt Mitchell, wife, Lori and children, Alyssa, Jaxon, Layla, Pyston and Lynexx; his devoted sister, Donna Herron; brother Marty Mitchell and children Blair and Jake; former son-in-law Richard Jenkins. A celebration of Alan's life will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, 806 Cedar, Duncan, with Father Dwight Helt officiating. In honor of Alan, pizza-one of his favorite foods-will be served in the Parish Hall following the service, accompanied by music from some of his favorite records. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to:
